Star Destroyers are the capital ships of the Earth Republic Star Navy. They have crew complements of between 50 and 120, several weapons systems, powerful reactors, starfighter wings, science sections, full medical bays, hangars, and full repair shops, among other similarities. Because of their life support capacity, they do not generally push beyond their crew complements for deployment or engage in hot-bunking.
The flagship of the Star Navy is always a Star Destroyer. Until it went missing, the flag was the ERS Daimajin. After its disappearance, the Valkyrie took the Daimajin's place as the flag and remained so for many years (while the Valkyrie was missing in 2150, the Hydra became the flagship for a brief period), until the launch of the ERS Manticore at Operation Earthmover, when it was the flag for mere minutes before its destruction, reverting the Valkyrie to the flag for another year. In 2153, upon the launch of the ERS Titan, it was then named flag, and remained so through the Liberator War, the Battle of Black Star in 2155, and the conflict with the Z. After the Titan's disappearance during the battle of Delta Pavonis, the Takshaka--under the captaincy of Ash Cai--became the flag through the end of the Z conflict and the neutralization of Mu Arae. The Titan resumed as flagship after its repair in the summer of 2156.
Overview[]
Star Destroyer used to be synonymous with the Daimajin class, named for the ERS Daimajin, of Star Navy vessels, but now encompasses three classes of large fleet ships. Star Destroyers may be divided into three classes of ship: the Daimajin class, launched in 2124, the Manticore class, launched in 2152 with the ERS Manticore, and the Odyssey class, launched in 2154 with the ERS Odyssey. The Star Destroyer classes are the largest ships in the ERSN fleet, serving as capital ships defending key Earth Republic installations and civilian populations, fighting large battles against belligerent aliens, and exploring sectors adjacent to the Republic Sector. They are generally considered the largest possible ships that can currently fit within a warp-shield bubble.
The chief difference between the Daimajin and Manticore classes is resource allocation. Daimajin-class ships have a standard weapon complement of five weapon consoles, and six Apex Starfighters. This loadout allows for plentiful reactor power without allocating that power for basic operation. A Manticore-class ship features double weapons and twelve Apex Starfighters, but it possesses the same size of reactor and the same crew complement. This loadout forces the allocation of power to the standard operation of basic systems and the extra weapons, and places strain on engineering resources when there is damage. For this reason, a Manticore-class Star Destroyer hits harder but runs out of resources more quickly, and it is therefore not optimal for long engagements. It can, however, take an additional hull breach and can generally take more damage before experiencing cascading failures.
The Odyssey-class, launched in 2154 in partnership with Maxicorp, are also considered to be capital ships and Star Destroyers. Consisting of one ship (the ERS Odyssey) until the 2157 launch of the ERS Iliad, the class has a smaller maximum crew complement of 50 and a larger hangar and storage capacity for long missions and to park larger vessels.
