Named from the words "Shani Devosh," which is Flotilla Skelow dialect for "High Mystery," this star's hyperspace pathway was collapsed when the Flotilla Skelow found it. The hyperspace pathway was painstakingly reestablished by the Flotilla Skelow over nearly a decade of dangerous navigational effort. The pathway is a long one, being at the far end of the sector and almost orphaned, and to this day, generally only Flotilla vessels take passengers and cargo through it.

Shan Devosh is an enormous variable star, similar in size to CK Carinae, and known to be temperamental. It is capable of sending out flares that cause strange disturbances in hyperspace around it, which make the hyperspace pathway dangerous when it is in flux. Predicting these fluxes is the devoted work of hyperspace cartographers and navigators on either end of the portal route, who post warnings and even restrict hyperspace travel when energy disturbances in the pathway are too extreme. The stars on either end of the portal route, Mina Devosh (lit. "Gateway to the Mystery") and Shan Devosh are dominated by the Valuable Guild of Stratasailers and Star-Weapon Builders, as they use the station at Shan Devosh to develop star weapons with minimal risk to others (and minimal oversight). Accordingly, they have developed a strong base of talented navigators, cartographers, and hyperspace experts to help manage the portal route. Many of these individuals and experts hail from the Flotilla, who maintain an interest in protecting and upkeeping the Shan Devosh portal route.
